Picking a college is one of the most important decisions you’ll make during your high school journey. All the hard work and dedication you’ve put in over the past four years of high school comes together in your college application, which is your chance to showcase who you are and find the school that fits you best. It’s an exciting time, but it can also feel overwhelming. Here are some key things to keep in mind to make the process a little less stressful!

  1. Understanding Yourself and Campus Culture

    • Before diving into applications, take some time to think about what kind of environment helps you thrive.

      1. What subjects are you most passionate about?

      2. Do you prefer large lecture halls with lots of energy, or smaller, discussion-based classes where you can connect closely with professors and other students?

      3. Can you picture yourself at a large, diverse university, or do you prefer a smaller, close-knit campus community?

    • Understanding your learning style and personality will help you choose a college where you’ll feel comfortable and supported.

  2. Academic Fit

    • Explore what each school offers academically.

      1. Look into departments or programs that match your interests by checking the school’s website for your major of interest and explore research opportunities, clubs, or faculty whose work excites you.

      2. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your school counselor for advice or insight about specific majors. They can help guide you toward programs that align with your goals.

  3. Financial Fit

    • College can be expensive, so it’s important to consider what’s financially realistic for you and your family.

      1. Research schools that offer strong need-based or merit-based financial aid.

      2. A great starting point is https://studentaid.gov where you can explore different types of federal aid and scholarships to see what you may qualify for.

  4. Mindset

    • Finally, remember that there is no such thing as a “perfect” college. The right school is the one where you can grow, learn, and be happy. Focus on finding a place where you will be motivated and supported over the next four years. This is a big decision, but it is also an exciting opportunity to begin the next chapter of your journey!
