Training Your Brain Over Break

School break is a time for rest and relaxation. But just like any muscle in your body, your brain weakens without exercise. In order to prevent this, there are certain forms of “exercise” that are tailored to improve cognitive function (aka brain power). Don’t worry, training your brain doesn’t have to be overwhelming; even reading this article is helping strengthen it! Here are some fun ways to keep your mind active over breaks from school:

  1. Reading

No matter the genre, reading is a great way to benefit your brain. In this study, researchers found that reading helps to increase neural activity. This means that reading helps you to recall information faster and store more facts and knowledge. The beautiful thing about reading is that it is super accessible and can be completely tailored to your interests. Libraries are a great way to access  books for free, or you can head to your local bookstore to purchase some new  favorites! You can also mix and match genres as you please. A nonfiction book is a great way to learn something new while a fiction book can help grow your imagination. Next time you’re heading out to lounge by the pool or cuddling up on a snowy day, don’t forget to grab a book!

  1. Phone Games

Most people are on their phones for a good portion of the day. Instead of scrolling aimlessly through social media, why not play a quick game? Not only are brain games fun, but they're beneficial to your health too! The relationship between crosswords and memory improvements is well studied, as evidenced by this recent study. I’m a personal fan of Wordle, a game where you get a few chances to guess a five letter word, but the New York Times crossword never fails to teach me something new!

  1. Physical exercise

Though you may think physical exercise only strengthens your body, it actually helps strengthen your mind as well! Exercise can help to increase cognition and memory in addition to motor coordination, as evidenced in this article. Any form of exercise is great, but the benefits are even better when you exercise with others. It’s also a great way to see your friends over the break!

  1. Virtual Tutoring

Though the above options are great supplements to learning, tutoring can help you master subjects you’ve been struggling with in class. RISE Philadelphia has tutoring options for students K-12 all throughout the year, including the summer months and winter holidays! Sign up to be matched with a tutor here
